Unique places to stay
If staying somewhere a little bit different and a little bit special is on the cards, you are sure to find the right spot at one of the many unique accommodation options on the Kāpiti Coast. Here's a few visitor favourites.
The Old Stables
Talisman Nursery, 135 Ringawhati Road, Ōtaki 5583
These historic brick stables, set amongst the mature trees of Talisman Nursery have been converted into the most delightful cottage.
Built in the early 1920s with locally made bricks, The Old Stables housed draught horses and equipment as part of the Mangahao – Haywards power reticulation scheme. Lovingly converted during the late 1980s by a conservation architect it is now perfect as a deliciously cosy retreat.
Only 5 minutes drive from Ōtaki, the tranquillity of the surroundings make it feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. With so many original features and modern must-haves (like the log fire) The Old Stables are just perfect for relaxing and re-energising.
Nestled amongst olive trees overlooking the ocean to Kapiti Island, the stunning Kokomea PurePod provides a truly unique accommodation option. Getting to Kokomea PurePod involves a gentle walk through native bush and up the ‘The Gully’ with its beautiful spring-fed, clear stream.
The luxurious facilities include a fabulous shower, crisp linen, a gas hob and a barbeque, but if you don't feel like cooking you can pre-order a delicious breakfast and dinner hamper which will be in the Pod when you arrive.
Wake in the morning to the sunshine twinkling on the sea and the beautiful chorus of birdsong. You won't want to leave.
Dreamscape Glamping is a luxurious glamping site with magnificent views of Kapiti Island and the country vista. Offering you a boutique exotic glamping experience, it may be glamping but you’ll experience many comforts you might not have at home - from outdoor baths under the stars to a fire pit and a beautiful outdoor bar.
You’ll experience a touch of rural living in a slightly urban setting. You may, every now and then, hear a slice of the real world but the chorus of the native birds, farm animals and stunning views provides a world of your own. Enjoy the opulent surroundings with a dash of international vibe in the chic atmosphere of this beautiful glamping setup.
The Lodge on Kapiti Island
Waiorua Bay, Kapiti Island
Kapiti Island Nature Tours provide the only accommodation on the Island, from The Lodge, their base at the North End.
Beautiful safari-style tents allow guests to enjoy a private, secluded corner of paradise in luxurious glamping accommodation while the onsite cabins, lined with native timber, provide a more traditional stay. An ensuite option is also available at the coastal bungalow.
With stunning views of the bush-covered hillsides, guests can bask in the afternoon sun with a glass of wine, listening to the spectacular symphony of native bird-song while a chef prepares their meals.
Kāpiti Glamping - Te Hapua Wetlands
Kāpiti Glamping's Te Hapua Wetlands tent, which sleeps up to five, is the ideal family or group accommodation in a very special setting. The tent sits next to a wetland lake - one of New Zealand's most rare and precious ecosystems and recognised locally as an area of special significance.
Decked out with a luxurious 4-poster queen bed, a bunk room containing 3 single beds, and lots of comfortable seating - everything has been thought of for comfortable glamping. A spacious verandah to the front of the tent is a great gathering space for socialising and watching the wetland wildlife in comfort.
In the evening kick back, relax, and jump in the hot tub (big enough for the whole family) for some soaking and star-gazing.

Theo's Cottage, which sits at the edge of the main pond offers the most intimate way of experiencing the magic of Ngā Manu Nature Reserve. Choosing this unique stay-over option gives you the privilege of having the Reserve and the dawn and dusk choruses all to yourself.
At the same time, you’ll be only a five-minute drive from shops, bakery, takeaway, cafes/bars, outdoor summer pool, and stunning beach and river experiences. This makes for a perfect get-away. The snug self-contained cottage sleeps a maximum of 4 people.
