Each year thousands of people come to Ōtaki for the Māoriland Film Festival, which celebrates indigenous films from around the world.

Kāpiti has been used as the location for films such as The Lord of the Rings, King Kong and the Kiwi film Second Hand Wedding which was filmed entirely in Kāpiti, as wellbeing written and produced by Kāpiti creatives. Director Sir Peter Jackson grew up on the Kāpiti Coast and first began making films here.
