Housing some of the world’s rarest and most valuable vehicles, Southward Car Museum is considered the premier privately owned automotive collection in the Southern Hemisphere.

They have an incredible range of classic cars, including a car owned by gangster Al Capone, as well as some newly acquired modern classics including Lamborghinis and Ferraris you can inspect close-up.

The public Mahara Gallery in Waikanae has at least six major exhibitions a year from Kāpiti-based and New Zealand-wide artists. 

Open Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 4pm and Sunday 1pm – 4pm.

There are also local galleries featuring Kāpiti art and crafts.

There are indoor pools in Paraparaumu and Ōtaki

The Coastlands Aquatic Centre in Paraparaumu is a 25m lane pool heated to 28 degrees, plus a smaller pool great for kids with a water temperature of 32°c and a separate toddlers pool with water features.

Ōtaki Pool has a 33.5m pool and a toddler’s pool, as well as a free outdoor splash pad if you don't mind the rain!

Whether you're into planes, trains or local history, you can while away a wet day at one of Kāpiti's museums.

Try the Museum of Aviation at the airport or the Wellington Tramway Museum and nearby Paekākāriki Station Museum. You can learn about local history from the pioneering days to now at the Ōtaki Museum and Kāpiti Coast Museum.
