Waikanae

Waikanae is considered the garden and bird capital of Kāpiti. With a beautiful beach, many walking trails, an outdoor pool, fantastic eateries and a boutique cinema there's plenty to keep you entertained.

A Town Centre full of treats

Waikanae town centre is a haven of activity, with shopping, eateries, a weekly mid-week market and a boutique cinema.

In and around the town square you'll find a fantastic range of cafes such as Siggy's Pies, the perfect spot for a delicious treat on the go. Grab lunch from the delectable Joe & Joy who are Coast-famous for their incredible speciality donuts that change every week. Or have a hearty meal with a craft beer match at North End Brewery's BBQ restaurant and brewpub, the Salt and Wood Collective

Thanks to the wonderful coastal climate, the outdoor Waikanae Pool is the perfect place to cool off in summer, have a dip and let the kids play. If it is too hot outside immerse yourself in the wonderful art at Mahara Gallery - the largest public art gallery on the Coast and has a number of major exhibitions each year. For those who wish to discover local history, stop by the Kāpiti Coast Museum and get your fix.

Head to the beach

Te Moana Road – ‘the road to the sea’, takes you to Waikanae Beach - a delightful beachside community full of wonderful classic Kiwi baches.

The beach itself is a wide and uncrowded space, which creates the perfect opportunity for horse riding, walking or simply sitting back, taking in the view and watching the sunset over Kapiti Island. Take the kids to the park for a play or enjoy a spot of tennis in the public court.

Need refreshments? Make sure you grab a treat at Olde Beach Bakery, renowned for its home-baked goods but be aware that you'll have to get in quick to beat the locals! Stop for lunch at Long Beach or head up to Tuk Tuk Thai Waimea for dinner and views. If you're in need of a good old ice cream, the team at Waikanae Beach 4 Square are on hand to help.

Explore the many trails

Waikanae boasts some of the most popular trails in the Wellington region including the Waikanae River Loop and the Parata Track for some of the best views to Kapiti Island. With options for walking, running, biking or horse riding Waikanae has the trail for you
