Spend the day splashing in the waves, take a walk, watch the sunset or go for a horse ride. With 40 kilometres of sandy beaches, you're spoilt for choice in Kāpiti.

The surf’s often up in Paekākāriki, but when it’s not, grab you paddle boarding to watch the sunset over Kāpiti Island.

Raumati Beach and Raumati South both have sandy beaches great for swimming, surf casting, kayaking and other water sports.

Paraparaumu Beach, a safe swimming and child friendly beach, and also a popular spot for fishing, boating, kayaking.

Ōtaki beach is known for great surfing with the Surf Life Saving Club and Wellington Surf Lessons.

The beautiful cherry blossom lined Te Moana Road, ‘the road to the sea’ will lead you to Waikanae beach.

Peka Peka may be the smallest of the seaside towns, but the beach is one of the most beautiful!


With two cinemas located in Kāpiti, you have an array of movies to choose from. Event cinema's a modern cinema located at Coastlands Shopping centre featuring your brand new blockbusters and Shoreline cinema, an independent cinema in Waikanae featuring an eclectic mix of films from around the world.

Coastlands Aquatic Centre

Coastlands Aquatic Centre is a stunning state-of-the-art facility consisting of a 25 x 25 metre lane pool, catering for all ages and aquatic abilities. Using the latest technology in pool design and is the first centre in Australasia to have a translucent roof, it reduces energy costs and creates the feeling of being outdoors.

Whether you're looking for exercise, recreation, swimming lessons or a nice cup of coffee, there is always something for you. Check out pool and lane availability for the best time to go.

Cycle the coastal trails

Choose the scenic ride through Queen Elizabeth Park on the Te Ara o Whareroa track from Paekākāriki to Raumati South. Or any of the other gentle or challenging cycleways the region has to offer.

Many cycleways are also shared paths for horseriding and walking, so please be aware of the impact you may have on other users.

Horse Trekking

Our magnificent beaches all along the Kāpiti Coast are open to horses.

Some areas in Paekākāriki, Paraparaumu, Waikanae and Ōtaki have restrictions from 11am-5pm from 1st of December to the end of daylight saving.

Te Horo Equestrian Centre offers pony rides, treks, lessons, accommodation for horses and riders, any age and any level.

Beachbrook Stables can take you for a ride on Ōtaki Beach.

Beach horse treks are also available with the Kāpiti Equestrian Centre in Waikanae.

With three aquatic centres, Ōtaki Pool, Waikanae Pool (summer season) and Coastlands Aquatic Centre, there is plenty for the family to enjoy any day of the week.

Kāpiti Ten Pin Bowling

Head to Kāpiti Ten Pin Bowling for a game of ten pin bowling. Great for families - try glow in the dark bowling at night! 

You can also have a go on the mini golf course, arcade games or at table tennis.

Haruātai Park Ōtaki

Get wet at the brand new splash pad or try out the pump track on your bike, great for beginners. Haruātai Park in Ōtaki also has a keyhole basketball court, picnic tables with shade sails, toilets and Kāpiti's tallest swing. There's also outdoor exercise equipment if you want to join in the fun!

Maclean Park

Maclean Park, Paraparaumu Beach

Maclean Park playground and skate park in Paraparaumu Beach features a lighthouse, life sized motor boat and trailer, and a mouse wheel.

A Kāpiti favourite, Maclean Park sits between the beach and the shops. Kids love the marine themed playground and 'witch's hat' climbing structure.

Maclean Park is often home to events in the summer so keep an eye out for activities.

This beachfront playground in Raumati Beach is home to a fantastic splash pad, plenty of play equipment including a flying fox and a miniature railway.

Set amidst beautiful trees and flower beds, there are picnic tables in both the sunshine and the shade. There are swings for all ages, a sand pit with a digger and a tunnel slide down a hill.

The miniature train on the bank above the playground features two tunnels and is a double loop track just under 1km long. The train runs between 1pm-4pm on Sundays and is $1.50 a trip.
