Karolina Stus – Winner Expressive Category, NZIPP/NIKON IRIS Awards 2020

Karolina's fine art editorial approach creates timeless, luminous and cinematic images. Her goal as a portrait photographer is to look past the face we present, to capture something deeper. Sometimes this results in a bright, eye-catching image, and sometimes a more poetic study of the face. Karolina is in love with everything what is old, odd, or different; she finds these things beautiful. Karolina transforms these old things and gives them new life.

The NIKON/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards are organised by the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP) and supported by major sponsor NIKON. These annual awards, open to all New Zealand and International professional photographers, have been running for 35 years. The Awards celebrate the innovation and excellence of professional photography today, providing a platform for recognition within the wider photographic community and with the general public.

Jennifer Summers: Merit Award, Parkin Drawing Prize  2020

Suburban Orb - Pen and Tea on Rag Paper

Suburban Orb is a stylised map of fictional suburbs. The suburbs draw in closer to the middle emulating the increasing density of modern living. The roads have no pattern to them, and the map does not deviate from its focus on suburban housing and streets. From a distance, the details of the drawing are not visible and suggests to the viewer a very different illustration.

The Parkin Prize is a national award and an annual exhibition held at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. Each year the winning entry will be purchased and added to a unique collection of drawings by New Zealand artists. The Prize was established by Chris Parkin, an arts patron and former owner of New Zealand’s only boutique art hotel – Museum Art Hotel in Wellington.

Marcus Ebbett - Highly Commended, People’s Choice for the Adam Portraiture Award 2020

Marcus - (Self Portrait) Oil on Canvas

Marcus Ebbett is a New Zealand Artist based on the Kāpiti Coast. Marcus has been a professional artist for 6 years.  He enjoys working with a wide range of materials over an equally wide range of subject matter. There is though, a strong feeling for the New Zealand landscape with a leaning toward nautical themes that reflects his interest in sailing, diving and fishing. The majority of his work is painted in oils but he also uses watercolour and acrylic with flair.

The People’s Choice Award gives exhibition visitors the opportunity to vote for their favourite portrait in the show. Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, online voting was offered for the first time in 2020.

Elisabeth Vullings - Merit, Parkin Drawing Prize

Paraparaumu artist Elisabeth Vullings creates unique, architecturally inspired works of art. But when lockdown hit artist's block set in.

Elisabeth created 1:1 Door during lockdown. The piece itself looks at the boundaries that were instilled during lockdown, focusing on the door, before zooming out to the plan of Elisabeth's house, street, neighbourhood and continues zooming out to where we are in New Zealand.

The door became a mediator between the home and the studio, a place where Elisabeth could actively and verbally participate in home life while intermittently working on the door's wooden surface with pen and acrylic.

Michelle Retimana - Elected member of NZ Academy of Fine Arts

Michelle's art has a Contemporary New Zealand/ Maori influence in decoration and design. The Koru is a prominent feature, and the art of Harakeke (flax weaving) Taniko weaving and Korowai (feather cloaks) is also incorporated into some of her sculpture.

With inspiration from nature, Michelle likes to work with natural items for texture, also using heavily textured clays and often prefer more earthy oxides to glazes.  Michelle works from the heart often starting with something in mind that evolves into something quite different. All her work is individually hand formed, every piece unique and original
