5 of the best Kāpiti Coast Winter Walks
Just because winter has arrived it doesn't mean that walks are off the cards. In fact, here on the Kāpiti Coast, it is the exact opposite. You'll see why with these trails!
Otaki River Trail
Shelter in regenerating native trees from the highway down to the estuary. Park by SH1 and walk down and back. Make sure you leave time for a well deserved hot chocolate afterwards at Gorge Café or River Cottage Café. Dogs are welcome on lead.
Want to step up the game? Try out the Ōtaki River Park Run on a Saturday morning!
The lower walks of Whareroa Farm are a mix of regenerating bush and old bush remnants, including kohekohe groves, which flower in early winter. Follow the signs for Te Ara Ramaroa and you’ll find an ancient kohekohe glade or check out the Forest loop walk, or both! Warm-up afterwards with coffee and cake at Beach Road Deli.
Kohekohe Loop Walk
It might be a little muddy underfoot directly after rain, but you’ll be sheltered from winter winds amongst the nikau palm forest and ancient kohekohe trees which flower in June - directly from the trunks! Dogs are welcome on lead. See if the kiddos can find the hidden Urban Hut which has been there since summer 2020/21! Pop into Relish Café afterwards for the best ginger gems in the North Island (apparently)!
