Celebrate the Māori New Year on the Kāpiti Coast with an exciting month-long programme of whānau-friendly events kicking off on Friday 24 June with the magical Matariki Ramaroa Light Festival at Maclean Park, Paraparaumu Beach.

Sadly, due to an unfavourable weather forecast, the light festival Opening Weekend has been shortened to Friday 24th June only. Saturday 25th June is cancelled.

Matariki Ramaroa will once again light up Kāpiti with two weekends of extraordinary light sculptures bookending a month-long arts experience including MFF2022 - the Māoriland Film Festival!

Matariki Ramaroa opens at Maclean Park, Paraparaumu on June 24 2022 - the first Matariki public holiday with light sculptures, beach bonfire, musicians, artists and kai over the entire weekend.

From June 29 - July 3, Ōtaki will once again welcome the world to the 9th Māoriland Film Festival, the largest international Indigenous Film Festival in the Southern Hemisphere. Indigenous filmmakers from across the globe will share their stories in over 80 films screening at the MFF with award-winning feature-length drama and illuminating documentaries, to a diverse collection of short films.

Throughout the rest of the month-long celebrations, explore the amazing Matariki Ramaroa programme of music, theatre, dance, environmental and community events across Kāpiti ending with the closing weekend of the Light sculptures at Ōtaki Beach on July 15 - 16.

Travel the world at Māoriland - Aotearoa’s International Indigenous Film Festival.

For five days this Matariki, Ōtaki will welcome Indigenous filmmakers from across Aotearoa and the world to share their stories with over 80 award-winning feature and short drama and documentary films.

9 years young the MFF is the largest international Indigenous Film Festival in the Southern Hemisphere. Enjoy films, meet the filmmakers and join the circle of Indigenous cinema through art, emerging technology, industry workshops, kōrero and more! Highlights include the Māoriland Keynote and Māoriland Red Carpet Party.

At Māoriland Film Festival you will be transported around the world to places and peoples whose stories will intrigue and amaze.
